The Big One Didn't Get Away!

British Columbia....had the best fishing day of my life! Spent three and half days with my cousin and uncle fishing from their Grady White north of Port Hardy. The area was perhaps one of the most beautiful untouched spots on North America I've ever seen. Just Beautiful!!!!

On any visit to the Pacific Northwest there are few must stops for your eats. Here are just a few that I feel deserve to be mentioned in Travelin' About's Dive Series.

1. East-West Cafe (the best Thai food I've had in the United States)

Fishing off Vashon Island, Washington

The weather has been amazing in Washington. Mount Rainier kept constant watch over the Sound while we fished off Vashon Island. Being on the water all morning was a true treat.

Mount Rainier

On our approach into SeaTac, I had a spectacular birds eye view of
Mount Rainier.

Kentucky Derby 2005, part I

82 days left until the 131st running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in my hometown of Louisville, KY. As I eagerly await (as you should too!) the first Saturday of May to arrive, the mint to sprout, and the bourbon to be bottled in Loretto, it is equally important to keep a watchful eye on the Derby prep races. This will be my return to the Derby after too many years of being away in California never being able to get off work. Let the races begin!

The Smokey's take on an English Tradition

On the edge of Gatlinburg, Tennessee sits hidden away an English pub, with Smokey Mountain twist. The Fox and Parrot is positioned on top of a large lodge with a few artist workshops on the bottom floor. The keepers house sits next door with a watchful eye on potential passerbys. The pub is enournmous and airy unlike its sister pub in (?) England, with plenty of room though for a good dart game with the boys. .... pours a good Guinness and has fresh fish & chips cooked up on the spot with home style chips which are great! Good luck finding it, but if you do, your in for a treat.

Maker's Mark Ambassador

Kentucky bourbon in its purest form! We Kentuckians believe bourbon flows in our blood and with that we love to share our secret to life's best treasures. If you have never had the occasion to try Maker's Mark, or bourbon for that matter, wait no longer. You're missing out on one of this countries best spirits.

Hillberts Burgers has become my staple during my travels through Austin. Family owned and operated for the last 30 years, Hillberts is an Austin landmark serving up the best jalapeno cheeseburger and onion rings in town! There Dallas wings are great too!

Hillberts has two loctions in Austin, although I have only been to the one on Lamar (its right down the street from my apartment!) If you are travelin' through Austin and want a great burger, look no further.

Feeling Kinky in Texas? Well, if you're referring to my new found hero Kinky Friedman than yes! Shortly after arriving to Austin, Susy discovered Kinky's "Guide to Texas Etiquette or How to Get to Heaven or Hell Without Going Through Dallas-Fort Worth" during her first travels to the Lone Star state and brought it back to us in California for insights into the land we were about to embark upon.

As it turns out, Kinky has made a number of attempts at the Governors Mansion here in Texas (oh where were his supporters in 1994!). On this day, the twelth of February in the Year of our Lord Two Thousand and Five, I hereby endorse Mr. Kinky Friedman as the only canidate fit to govern Texas.

Thank you Kinky Friendman!

Travelin' About Here, There & Back Again

Travelin' About is a brain child of mine from years ago. The website is in the making but for the time being, I felt a blog would serve its purposes well. I find myself travelin' about often. During this travelin', I discover amazing places along the way whether its Hamburger Haven or Spec's in San Francisco, Hillbert's in Austin, the BBQ stand on 6th and Muhammad Ali in Louisville, Los CuĂles in Oaxaca, Mexico, or somewhere else off the beaten track in the Smokey's. They all have special meaning to me and I feel it only appropriate to share them with you. The "Here and There" comes from my father who years ago wanted to start a newsletter/magazine called "Here, There and Back Again." His dream was to share with others the great places in the world he's traveled. It is my hope to fulfill that journey started years ago by my father and perhaps (hint old man) in the process take him along for the ride!

Enjoy!
